A Letter from Paul

It is hard to believe that nearly four years have passed since you helped elect me as your Mayor. I remain extremely proud of the campaign we ran, and very grateful to the diverse group of Ypsilanti neighbors and friends (like you!) who worked together to help make our effort a success. Now it is time to run for re-election.

In my time as Mayor, our city has faced many challenges, but we have never stopped seeking new opportunities, and never stopped looking toward the future. While the nation (and Michigan, in particular) has suffered from the greatest economic downturn in generations, Ypsilanti continues its steady progress toward becoming a relative success story in our region:

• Despite ongoing fiscal challenges, we have maintained a balanced city budget and worked hard to minimize cuts to city services that are essential to our community’s quality of life.
• Significant new investment in downtown, including new loft condominiums, retail stores, and restaurants and nightclubs, have added greatly to our already vibrant mix of small and independent locally owned businesses.
• The recent addition of the SPARK East small business incubator has become a powerful catalyst for creative entrepreneurs and professionals.
• Recent citizen-led efforts to bring solar panels to city hall and community gardens to our neighborhoods and schools and to promote urban agriculture demonstrate our ongoing commitment to making Ypsilanti a “greener” and more sustainable city.
• Ypsilanti continues to attract many artists and musicians to live and work in our community, bolstering our ongoing transformation into a twenty-first-century economy based on education, arts, and entertainment.

As your mayor, I remain committed to working hard to erase old battle lines and bringing people together to work toward positive and constructive solutions to our city’s many challenges. I am very proud of what we have accomplished together in my first four years, but there is still much work to be done.
